Elliston is on the Bonavista Peninsula close to the Town of Bonavista. If you are driving north on Route 230 towards Bonavista you’ll come to Route 238 which takes you into Elliston. If you are in Bonavista already, you get to Elliston by taking Route 238 South. We visited in September 2017 and Route 238 between Route 230 and Elliston was one of the worst roads we’ve ever been on. It’s scheduled to be replaced, so it may not be a problem for you. The part of Route 238 between Elliston and Bonavista is a far better road.

Elliston bills itself as The Root Cellar Capital of The World. You’ll see several root cellars in the area. There is lots to check out in Elliston including:

  • Home From The Sea, John C. Crosbie, Sealers Interpretation Centre
  • Sealer’s Memorial and Granite Memorial Wall
  • Nearby Sandy Cove Beach is where you will find the Puffin Viewing Area.
  • Nearby Maberly Scenic Loop

Drive through town and you won’t have any trouble finding the Sealer’s Memorial. The Sealers Memorial Statue, is Reuben Crewe and his son, Albert John Crewe, from Elliston. They both lost their lives in the 1914 S.S. Newfoundland Sealing Disaster. The granite wall lists the names of all 364 men and boys who were on the S.S. Newfoundland and the S.S. Southern Cross in the spring of 1914.

Take the road towards Maberly from Elliston to get to the Puffin viewing area in Sandy Cove.
