Trout River

Trout River is at the very southern end of Gros Morne National Park. The drive on highway 431 from Woody Point is spectacular. You’ll follow The Tablelands on your left and the green Lookout Hills on your right. As you approach Trout River, turn right on Mountain Drive and follow it down to the beach.

You’ll see the Seaside Restaurant, which in our opinion is one of the best places to dine in Gros Morne. The food, service and view are all great. Just behind the restaurant you will find Trout River’s boardwalk. You can walk the entire length of the beach either way.

Walking west on the boardwalk takes you past several interesting buildings. The Shoreline Deli is towards the western end of the boardwalk. Shelley Hann makes up fresh sandwiches and bakes some great treats. You can carry out for a hike, or have a picnic on the boardwalk.

At the end of the boardwalk you’ll see several colourful stores (in Newfoundland, a store is basically a storage shed). You can then walk past all the fishing boats and return to the restaurant on Main Street.

Leaving the restaurant, if you drive west on Main Street, it turns south at the river. Follow it to the end and you’ll be at the foot of Trout River Pond, one of Gros Morne’s inland fjords.

Up on the hill overlooking town, you’ll find Elephant Head RV Park. In addition to serviced sites for RV’s, they have a couple of very cool glamping tents.
