The Coastal Trail is in Gros Morne National Park just off Route 430 between Rocky Harbour and Sally’s Cove. The trail follows the Old Mail Road, which was used to dogsled mail in the winter from 1882 to 1952.
The trail is linear, about 6 km return. Normal hiking time is 1 – 2 hours. The trail is level, parts of it can be swampy, especially in June, following snow melt. The Coastal Trail runs between the summer fishing communities of Green Point and Baker’s Brook.
One end of the trail starts in the Green Point Campground. The other end starts at the bridge on Route 430 over Baker’s Brook. There are small parking areas at both ends of the trail. We started at the Green Point end. We went to the mouth of Baker’s Brook and returned. There is a pair of the famous red muskoka chairs where Baker’s Brook flows into the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
The road into the Green Point Campground is well marked along Route 430. Don’t confuse it with the road to Green Point itself, which is a geologically significant site, that you’ll also want to check out. You’ll pass the park office and you may have to stop and let them know you are doing the trail.
The trail goes through a dense tuckamore forest. It follows the rocky beach along the Gulf of St. Lawrence. There are a couple of fairly large ponds that you pass. It’s a beautiful walk, it can get pretty windy.
