Ship Harbour is on Placentia Bay just north of Argentia. Take Route 100 towards the Trans Canada from Placentia to Route 102, follow 102 through Fox Harbour to the end of the road. The pretty town runs along one side of the harbour.
Ship Harbour was the site of a secret meeting between Winston Churchill and Franklin Roosevelt in 1941. The meeting took place just 4 months before the United States entered World War II. The meetings took place aboard USS Augusta and HMS Prince of Wales, in the harbour just off the town. At the time the Americans were building their new base nearby in Argentia.
When you drive into town, you’ll see a museum on your right. Follow the signs and take the gravel road to the monument. It’s a narrow gravel road and you’ll wonder if you made a wrong turn. Hang in there and follow the road to the end.
There’s a parking area and a short trail where you can read the interpretive signs and look over the harbour. This is where British and American warships moored for the historic meeting.
