Port aux Basques is going to be the first glimpse on Newfoundland for many visitors. The ferry from North Sydney Nova Scotia arrives here. This is where the Newfoundland section of the Trans Canada begins. Travellers don’t have to go far, because the area within 45 minutes of Port aux Basques is one of the prettiest parts of the island.
The Grand Bay West Beach Trailway is one of the hidden gems located in Grand Bay West, one of the communities that makes up Channel-Port aux Basques. The 6 km of trail takes you to beautiful sand beaches and offers incredible views of Table Mountain. The trail is easy to walk. Some sections are boardwalk and the rest is a well kept gravel walkway.
The main trail head is on Kyle Lane, just off Grand Bay Road West. There is a parking area and a building with public washrooms. This parking area is closest to the sand beach. A second trail head is further up Grand Bay Road West, near Tavernor Drive. This section of the trail skirts around an inlet and has great views of the mountains.
