The Island Cove RV Park is located in La Scie on The Baie Verte Peninsula. Take Route 410 north from the Trans Canada to drive into the peninsula. Turn right (east) on Route 414 and follow it to La Scie. You drive down a steep long hill and the highway ends at Water St. Turn right and follow Water St. through town. Water St. ends at a turnaround where you enter the park.
The park is owned by the town and run by a wonderful lady named Bev. The setting is spectacular, the campsites are on a high plateau that overlooks the harbour and the North Atlantic. The electrical service is only 15 amp. The sites have water and there is a dumping station next to the office. The building houses washrooms, showers, laundry and an office. There is no WiFi, but a strong cell phone signal, you are right next to a tower. I tethered my laptop to my phone for Internet.
La Scie has some great trails and two of them start right at the campground. There is also a staircase that takes you down to an amazing rock beach. If you go in June, you’ll likely see icebergs. In the summer you’ve got a good chance to see whales. We visited in September and spent an hour one day watching a bald eagle.
The cliffs behind the trailer were constantly changing with the sun hitting them from different directions. The water at the mouth of the harbour can be quite rough. There was a small waterfall that you could see on the other side of the harbour. We watched several fishing boats going out and coming in. We got a lot of use from our binoculars at Island Cove.
Island Cove does not have a website, you can find their contact information on their Facebook page.
La Scie is a well serviced town. There’s a grocery store, a couple of hardware stores, a couple of gas stations, two restaurants, a drug store and a liquor store. There are convenience stores as well.
The top attraction in La Scie is the scenery and the great trails. We also visited the towns of Shoe Cove, Brent’s Cove and Harbour Round while we were in the area. We stayed four nights and could easily have hung around longer.
