Joe Batt’s Arm is located at the North-East corner of Fogo Island. It’s about a half hour drive (27 km) from the Ferry Ramp at Stag Harbour. Take Route 333 from the ferry to Fogo Centre. Turn right and follow Route 334 to Joe Batt’s Arm.
Legend has it that Joe Batt deserted Captain James Cook in 1763. He ended up on Fogo Island, was well liked and had the community named for him. Joe Batt’s Arm is home to the world famous Fogo Island Inn.
The community wraps around a large bay (arm). The Inn is on the west side of the arm and that is where you will find quite a few heritage homes and stages. On the south and east side of the bay you’ll find newer homes and a nice vantage point to see the Inn.
Go to the end of the road and you’ll come to the community park. This is where the trail out to the Long Studio starts. If you continue hiking past the studio, you come to a statue of the extinct great auk.
There is a very nice restaurant in town called Scoff. You can make dinner reservations. Normally at lunch time you can just drop in. We’d recommend it, great menu with fresh local ingredients.
Looking out from Joe Batt’s Arm on a clear day you can see Little Fogo. It’s about 9 miles away and was once settled. The island now has some summer cottages and a restored Catholic Church. Locals tell us that in the winter, residents from Little Fogo would walk across the ice to get to Fogo Island.
