Clarke’s Beach is on the west side of Conception Bay. Following Hwy 60 past Brigus, turn north onto Hwy 70. This is also called Conception Bay Highway.
First settled in the mid 1800’s, the present population is approx. 1500.
While Clarke’s Beach never had it’s own inshore fishery, many of its men worked the Labrador fishery. They worked on the ships of merchants from Cupids, Brigus or Bay Roberts. The Labrador fishery declined in the 1890s. At the same time there was an increase in productive agriculture and sawmill operations. With a variety of other businesses also developing, steady work was available for the people of the community.
There is a lengthy beach that runs along the hwy. From here you you have lovely views of Bay de Grave. On a clear day you can see the hamlet of Port de Grave.
To be perfectly honest, we came for the gin. You can’t miss The Newfoundland Distillery Co.. It is on the west side of the Conception Bay Highway, beside The Clarke’s Beach United Church.
A tasting room makes it possible to sample their line. A shop lets you purchase what you sampled. They make more than just gins, but that is where our hearts are! The seaweed gin is exceptional!
