Ochre Pit Cove

Ochre Pit Cove is on the west coast of Conception Bay, Avalon Peninsula, on  Route 70.

Word is this area was originally settled by the Beothuk. The present name came from the red soil in this area. A high iron content in the soil is responsible for that.

This is a small hamlet, with gently rolling hills. We always head to the water and there we found a substantial fishing pier. The breakwater was built up in 2009 and Ochre Pit Cove is one of the best places to anchor in the Conception Bay area.

At the top of the hill overlooking the harbour is the Brian Johnson Memorial Lookout.

With a view of the the water is the  Aubrey and Elizabeth Crowley House, built between 1910 and 1915. The home was designated a Registered Heritage Structure in 2001. The home sits on an acre of agricultural land with outbuildings. It is indicative of life on Conception Bay in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. Although fishing was critical, people also grew subsistence gardens and raised farm animals.

We stumbled upon Orange Clover Crafts and Salty Sea Cottages. The craft store is full of handmade crafts covering a wide range of goods. From hand-painted ornaments to knit sweaters, something will catch your eye!
