Western Bay

Drive north on the Avalon Peninsula’s Route 70. It follows the west side of Conception Bay. You’ll come to the community of Western Bay after Perry’s Cove and Small Point.

Western Bay is home to the coolest boardwalk in the province. It’s called both ‘The Western Bay Lighthouse Trail’ and ‘The Western Bay Boardwalk of Art’.

After the cod moratorium, several communities invested in tourism by building boardwalks and trails. Over the years, many of these have not been maintained and started falling into disrepair. Western Bay did not want to lose their 1.6 km Lighthouse Trail, so they came up with an amazing idea. You can buy a board, paint it up yourself and use it to replace an old board on the trail. The trail is easy to find. Just before you get to Western Bay (driving north), you’ll see a sign for Bradley’s Cove. Turn right and follow this road out to the trail-head.

It’s an easy trail to walk and you’ll find yourself looking at the boards as much as enjoying the scenery.
