Trail to Footprint Hill
Trail to Footprint Hill

New Perlican is on the Avalon Peninsula on Trinity Bay. The town is on Route 80, just north of Heart’s Content.

New Perlican is one of Newfoundland’s oldest settlements. It may have been settled as far back as 1619. Archaelogical digs have uncovered a large number of artifacts from the Hefford Plantation.

Community pride is obvious in New Perlican. The harbour is surrounded by freshly painted stages and stores.

SeaGlass B & B and Studio

Make sure you stop at the SeaGlass on Harbour Drive. We picked up a stained glass piece that’s now hanging in our window in London. We also got a tour of this beautiful B+B which features a gorgeous bridge (deck) overlooking the harbour.

Scalliwaggs

If you are wanting a coffee or ice cream, stop in at Scalliwaggs, which is right on Route 80. You cannot miss the colourful building. The parking lot is a great place to survey the pretty harbour.

Footprint Hill

Footprint Hill is very cool and it’s totally unmarked. Ask for some directions when you are at the SeaGlass. You can park along Tory Road and there is a trail that goes past the cemetery and up the hill. The hill has a rock  cap with a great view of the harbour entrance. Before coastal communities were connected up by roads, mail would come in by coastal boats. Locals would hike to the top of the hill and watch for the boat. To kill some time, they’d carve impressions around their footprints in the rock. You have to look closely and you’ll find all kinds of footprints, carved in the rock.
