Old Perlican

Old Perlican is on Trinity Bay, Avalon Peninsula. It’s located near the top of the Bay de Verde Peninsula (part of Avalon Peninsula) where Route 70 meets Route 80.

We drove up Route 80 to get there. Route 80 follows the east side of Trinity Bay. You can also get to Old Perlican by driving up Route 70, which follows the west side of Conception Bay.

Old Perlican is one of Newfoundland’s oldest fishing communities. Old Perlican’s fishing history dates back to the 17th century. Today the harbour is still busy with longliners. There is also a large fish plant located in Old Perlican.

If you drive north on Route 80, you’ll be excited when you get to the Esso at New Perlican, because your cell phone works again! You can fuel up, pick up a snack and check your messages in the parking lot.

From the Esso station take Blow Me Down Road into town. Turn right on Main Street and follow your nose to the harbour. On your right, you’ll pass our lunch stop, The Island View Restaurant. We had a nice home-made lunch and a good chat with the ladies. The harbour is a great place to stroll around. There is a large fleet of fishing boats, you also have views of Perlican Island, which protects the harbour.

If you plan to camp in the area, Old Perlican is well serviced with a grocery store and pharmacy. The Town of Old Perlican website has lots of information.
