Burgeo

Burgeo is on Newfoundland’s south coast about 120 km east of Port aux Basques. By road it’s 305 km from Port aux Basques. You drive north on the Trans Canada to Stephenville and then take Route 480 south to Burgeo.

The town of Burgeo is actually on an island that’s joined to the main island by a causeway. Burgeo is surrounded by a group of 365 islands known as the Burgeo Archipelago.

If you plan on travelling to Ramea, Grey River or Francois, you need to take a ferry from Burgeo.

Burgeo is a sizeable community with a population of about 1,300. The town has a wide range of services including groceries, hardware, restaurants and accommodations. The town also has its own cable TV company called the Burgeo Broadcasting System.

Burgeo Tourism

There’s lots to do in and around Burgeo. Start by checking out the town lookout. The stairs to the viewing platform are across the road from Burgeo Haven Bed + Breakfast.

The town has several scenic coves and inlets, just drive around and take some pictures. Find the bridge to Small Island. There are some beautiful views from the bridge.

We’d also recommend a visit to the town’s museum. There’s a lot of the town’s history on display, including an exhibit about Farley Mowat. The famous Canadian author lived in Burgeo for about five years. His famous book, ‘A Whale for the Killing’ was a true story from his time in Burgeo.

Sandbanks Provincial Park is right next to Burgeo. If you are visiting with an RV, you can camp at Sandbanks. The park has an extensive trail network. The beaches are incredible, you’ll think you are in the Carribean.
