Croque is a small community with a rich history. To get to Croque take Route 438 from Route 432 south of Main Brook. Croque has no stores or services, so make sure you gas tank is full and you have a snack and water. Route 438 is gravel. It’s about 16 km to Croque and another 9 km to the end of the road in Grandois-St. Julien’s.
Croque is on a well protected hook-shaped bay. In the 1600’s, French ships stopped in Croque before being dispatched to area harbours.
Croque has a French Naval Cemetery that dates to the 1700’s. There are also graves for English sailors. The French Navy visited Newfoundland every summer until 1970 to tend to the cemetery.
The waterfront buildings in Croque take you back to when the fishery was in full swing. Unfortunately the wharf and buildings in Croque are losing the battle with time.
