The Underground Salmon Pool near Roddickton is worth a visit, even if the Salmon are not running yet. We visited the last week of June, just ahead of 2019’s Salmon run.
Take Route 432 to Route 433, which is the exit for Roddickton, Englee and Conche. There is a gravel pull-off on the west side of Route 433. It’s about 3 km from Route 432. It looks like a parking area, but you can drive in quite a bit further. Take the gravel road 2.5 km into the bush and you’ll come to a parking area with maps and signs.
The area has a network of well maintained trails. The map on the sign in the parking area is a little confusing. You want Carroll’s Trail, which runs off to your right. Walk down to Brose’s Bridge, where you have some beautiful views of Beaver Brook. Cross the Bridge and continue to the next creek. You’ll see a Salmon sign. Go to your right to the viewing area, where the creek exits the cave. When the Salmon are running, they pile up at this spot. We were lucky enough to see an otter splashing around and then drying off on the rock.
The creek exiting this cave, enters the cave 800 metres upstream. Continue down the trail to see that point. It’s marked by a fence and not as easy to see as the cave’s exit point.
Beaver Brook is about 30 km long in total. The Salmon are migrating upstream to Boony Lake. Click here for a little more information about the area.
