Pilley’s Island is a community on an island of the same name. The island is joined with both Newfoundland and Triton Island by causeways. Pilley’s Island is on Route 380 between Robert’s Arm and Triton.
A ferry runs from the north-east corner of Pilley’s Island, serving Long Island and Little Bay Islands.
Pilley’s Island was the site of a pyrite mine that operated between 1887 and 1908. It was the first mine in Newfoundland to have electric lighting installed. Electric lights were also installed in town, well before towns in other parts of Newfoundland.
When you get into town, stop at the Heritage Centre. There is a museum and a short trail with nice views of town. The town has a rich history, you can read quite a bit more about Pilley’s Island on Wikipedia.
