Gun Hill

The Gun Hill Trail in Harbour Breton is only 1 km long, but quite challenging. Most of the climb is on well maintained wooden stairs, but as you  approach the peak there is some scrambling over a steep rocky trail. Making it to the top is well worth the effort.

Text from the Sign:

You have finally reached the summit of Gun Hill, approximately 600′ above sea level. Now you can take in the amazing view of the scenic and historic Harbour Breton. Gun Hill was originally called Strickland’s Head but through history the name was changed to Gun Hill. Cannons protecting the Newman & Company Premises on Thompson’s Beach were often fired at Gun Hill to test for distance and accuracy. The hill has been used throughout history as a lookout point for the community. Locals would venture here to watch for vessels approaching the harbour or sailing in and out of Fortune Bay. The Newman & Company would ensure that someone was always on the lookout when expecting their vessels coming from Europe, so that preparations could be made for the unloading of supplies and port wine.
