The Mi’kmaq Discovery Centre is perfectly located for your first stop on the way to Harbour Breton or St. Alban’s. The Bay d’Espoir Highway (Route 360) takes you from Bishop’s Falls to Harbour Breton through one of Newfoundland’s most remote areas.
When you start down the highway from Bishop’s Falls, it’s 129 km to the next gas station. Just past that you’ll come to Route 361, the turn-off for St. Alban’s. Turn right on Route 361 and you will immediately see the centre on your right.
The centre has beautiful displays showing the culture and history of Newfoundland’s Mi’kmaq (pronounced Migmaw) community. The centre is staffed by residents of nearby Conne River, part of the Miawpukek First Nation.
The centre is part of the hard work the community is doing to preserve their culture and language. We learned about the Mi’kmaq alphabet and some common phrases. The language is part of the curriculum in Conne River’s school.
The displays include locally made birch bark canoes. A canoe made in Conne River is on display at the Canadian Canoe Museum in Peterborough, Ontario.
