Pool’s Cove is on Route 362-10, Connaigre Peninsula, Fortune Bay. Take Route 362 south from Route 360. You’ll come to a ‘T’ intersection. Turn left onto Route 362-10 and follow to Pool’s Cove.
We really enjoyed our visit to Pool’s Cove. The town is very pretty and the community is doing some very innovative things to support both youth and seniors.
Pool’s Cove is where you go to take the ferry to Rencontre East (pronounced ’round-counter east’). Just drive through town to get to the ferry dock. The ferry does not take cars, it’s passengers and freight only.
Stop in at the town hall, right next to the big white United Church on Harbour Drive. They have a community museum, where we also learned about nearby resettled communities including Lally Cove and Bay du Nord.
There is a community centre directly behind town hall, that is also used as a youth centre. It’s a place where kids can hang out or get involved in community activities. The community centre also distributes affordable local food to area seniors. The community is working with Food First NL. The community centre had preserves, moose meat and salmon donated by local aquaculture operations. From the community centre, we went on to check out their community garden.
As you drive out of town, look for Valley Road. Take that short road, you’ll see a cemetery directly in front of you. The community garden is behind a white house on your left. They have chickens, ducks, a greenhouse and a wide variety of vegetables.
When you are at the community centre, ask to speak with Josephine Marshall. We really enjoyed learning about this amazing project. Click here to learn more about the Pool’s Cove local food program.
