In 1878 a giant squid measuring 55 feet was brought ashore in the community of Thimble Tickle. Today this hamlet is known as Glover’s Harbour. A full scale replica of the “monster” greets you as you enter the town, part of the Glover’s Harbour Giant Squid Interpretation Centre.
Glover’s Harbour is just before Leading Tickles as you head north on Hwy 350. Hwy 350 is east of Bishop’s Falls on the Trans Canada.
The interpretation Centre is very well done. In addition to the displays, a wide range of locally produced crafts and jams are available.
As you drive further you enter a small harbour, surrounded by high hills. There are about 70 people living here now.
While trying to get some pictures we met a man painting his bridge (deck to you mainlanders:). He stopped what he was doing and we spent the next hour learning about the fishery in that area and Labrador, fishing techniques used for the various species and species’ specific behaviors. It was a wonderful visit!
