Flower’s Cove is made up of numerous peninsulas and coves over a flat low area of land. Driving about we spotted the Flower’s Island Lighthouse. The Canadian Government built the lighthouse in 1899, to provide safe movement through the Strait of Bell Island for steamships sailing from Montreal and Quebec to Europe. Flower’s Island Lighthouse was built for a total of $8,801.00. It is the only lighthouse of it’s kind in all of Newfoundland. You cannot get on the island without a boat ride there are numerous spots around Flower’s Cove and neighbouring Nameless Cove where you can get good pictures.
The St. Barnabas “Skin Boot” Anglican Church can be seen from just about any corner of Flower’s Cove. Construction commenced in 1919 and it opened in 1931. A large part of the funding was raised by the making and selling of seal skin boots by the parishioners. The church is still in use. In 2018 major renovations are being undertaken. These include a new roof and new wood siding. Fundraisers are ongoing and donations are gratefully accepted. In 1997 St. Barnabas Anglican Church was designated a Registered Heritage Structure.
The peninsula at Nameless Cove gets you closest to the lighthouse. It’s also a great place to see sea birds and wild flowers.
