Newfoundland is full of hidden gems, that includes Shoal Cove West. We never regret going to the end of a small road, just to check it out.
Shoal Cove West is one of 3 communities on HWY 430-36. The other 2 settlements are Reefs Harbour and New Ferolle. They are on the New Ferolle Peninsula, north of Port au Choix. The current population on the peninsula is about 200. In case you are wondering, Shoal Cove East is a up by Flower’s Cove.
Shoal Cove West has a large collection of fishing stores (storage sheds) with lots of character. There is still a fishery operating in town.
The first settlers arrived in the late 1700s to fish. During the winter, diet and income was supplemented with hunting, trapping and forestry.
If you continue down the road to New Ferolle, you’ll can also get a look at the New Ferolle Lighthouse. If you are looking for a snack or a meal, we recommend Viking 430. It’s on the Viking Trail (Route 430) very close to the cut-off to Reef’s Harbour, Shoal Cove West and New Ferolle.
