We spent a couple of nice hours on top of Anguille Mountain at Cape Anguille. It’s not the easiest place to get to. You’ll need a friend with an ATV or a 4×4 truck. Our good friend Harry gave us a ride to the top where we enjoyed some spectacular views.
You need to take a scenic drive through the Codroy Valley to get to Cape Anguille, which is the western most point on the island of Newfoundland. From The Trans Canada, take Route 406. You’ll cross the Grand Codroy River in Upper Ferry. Before you cross the bridge there’s a spot you can buy gas and get a coffee or lunch. The prettiest part of the drive comes after you cross the river.
Follow 406 until you get to Codroy, Newfoundland. You’ll see Holy Trinity Church on your left as you come into town. Continue down the road past the road to the lighthouse. The road up the mountain is a pretty rough crushed rock road. You need a vehicle with high ground clearance.
The mountain looks over the western-most point of the island. You’ll see Codroy, Codroy Island, Cape Anguille and the Cape Anguille Lighthouse. The Gulf of St. Lawrence stretches to the horizon.
The top of the mountain is fairly flat. There is a criss-cross of trails. Somebody has even dragged an old trailer up here. The road up the mountain continues into the back country, where people will go moose hunting in the fall.
The Anguille Mountains are tree covered and not as high as the nearby Long Range Mountains. The Codroy Valley runs between the two mountain ranges.
