Sugar Loaf Mountain is on the Trans Canada Highway between Port aux Basques and The Codroy Valley. You can walk to the top. You can also get to the top on an ATV. There is a service road to the communication tower. It’s a pretty rough rock road and you wouldn’t want to take your nice truck up there.
The road runs up the west side of the mountain and you cannot see it from the Trans Canada. Take the Trans Canada (TCH) east from Port aux Basques. Turn left of the gravel road that’s past the Route 408 exit for Cape Ray. There is a sheep farm, just before the road. Sugar Loaf Mountain is a small round mountain with a communication tower on the peak. The gravel road takes you to the west side of the mountain. Find a place to park and you’ll see the steep road up to the summit.
The views in every direction are spectacular. You can see Big Pond, Table Mountain and the TCH on the east side of the mountain. On the west side of the mountain you have a view of Cape Ray, the T-Rail* and the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
*The T-Rail is the old railway bed and you can use it to cross Newfoundland on an ATV.
