Castle Hill National Historic site is on a small mountain overlooking Placentia, NL. The site is in the town of Jerseyside, now part of Placentia. The site is just minutes from the ferry terminal in Argentia. Take Route 100 towards Placentia and Cape St. Mary’s. You will see the entrance to the park on your right. It is very well marked.
Fort Plaisance was built by the French between 1662 and 1690. The area saw several battles in the early 1700’s as the British and French clashed over the Newfoundland fishery. Much of the fort was rebuilt by the British in the 1740’s and used to defend Placentia.
The parking area is not far from an interpretation centre that’s built into the side of a hill. They have a film you can watch that explains how and why the fortifications were developed. You can pick up headsets for a self-guided tour of the site. Take the stairs up to the main fortification and you’ll be treated to some spectacular views of Placentia.
