The proper name is Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s since the 2 communities amalgamated in 1992.
Most importantly, this Portugal Cove is not to be confused with Portugal Cove South at the southern edge of the Avalon.
Portugal Cove is about 15 minutes west of St. John’s. It is located on the shores of Conception Bay. It has a distinctly small community feel. The homes are perched among the hills surrounding the harbour.
The Bell Island Ferry terminal is located here. We had no intention of going to Bell Island, but it was too easy not to! The ferry runs year round almost hourly. The crossing takes 20 minutes barring unforeseen issues.
