Signal Hill National Historic Site is on the east side of St. John’s, overlooking the harbour. Honestly, you can’t miss it.
As you head up Signal Hill Rd, there is a parking lot on your right. There is a cafe and nice views of the harbour from here. You can walk up to Cabot Tower from here. Follow the road or take one of the hiking trails. There is also another smaller, parking lot at the top of the hill.
We arrived in the late afternoon. That came with pros and cons. Things were closing, but it wasn’t busy. If you like taking photos, your pictures of the harbour and St. John’s itself, will be difficult because of the position of the sun. If you want those panoramic shots you are better to head up in the morning.
The views are stunning. Sitting on a very high bluff you can see for miles. You get a bird’s eye view of the hiking trails, the coast, Fort Amherst, The Narrows, St.John’s Harbour and the city itself. There are a lot of jellybean houses!
Expect it to be windy and cool. If it’s not, consider yourself lucky!
