Route 340 takes you through Twillingate and Crow Head to the northern tip of North Twillingate Island. The road ends at a parking area that gives you access to a lookout, trails, a gift shop and the Long Point Lighthouse.
The lightkeeper’s house has been converted to a museum. Another white clapboard building is now a coffee/ice cream shop. There is a very scenic trail that starts next to the lighthouse.
The lighthouse itself was built in 1876. It is one of the last surviving brick lighthouses in the province. The lighthouse suffered damage in 1929 from an earthquake. It was encased in 1 foot thick reinforced concrete and that’s why it’s still standing and in use today.
The Long Point Lighthouse sits 331 feet above Notre Dame Bay on Devil’s Cove Head, at the mouth of Twillingate Harbour. The views from the nearby trail are spectacular. For more information on the lighthouse, click here.
The parking area at the end of Route 340 has a lookout. If there are icebergs or whales in the area, it’s a great vantage point. While we were there a very unusual German tour bus pulled up. It’s a company called Rotel and Newfoundland is one of their off the beaten path destinations.
