Hampden | The Beaches

Hampden is at the southern tip of White Bay, the large bay that separates the Baie Verte Peninsula from the Great Northern Peninsula.

Take Route 420 North from the Trans Canada and then follow Route 421 into town. As you enter town you’ll see The Barrens Walking Trail on your left. This takes you to a nice lookout where you can survey the entire area.

Continue into town to a large wharf at the bottom of White Bay. Route 421 continues along the east side of White Bay and ends at a small community called The Beaches.

When you get to The Beaches, they have built a large interpretive sign and a nice viewing platform. The Beaches is home to Canadian author Donna Morrissey.

The road out to The Beaches hugs the shoreline and has been reinforced with large rock retaining walls. As recently as 2004 the community had to be evacuated, because severe winter storms threatened to cut off road access.
