The full name is Mistaken Point Ecological Reserve UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Mistaken Point is a few hours from St. John’s. Follow the Hwy 10 south to Portugal Cove South. At the Edge of Avalon Interpretive Centre You will want to stop to learn more. The guided hiking tours begin from this point. You will need to pre book your tour to reserve a spot. Access to the fossil area is restricted.

Bob’s gout attack kept us from attempting this tour. It runs over 3 hours over uneven terrain. If you are interested in geograhy, geology and fossils this guided tour would be awesome, I am sure!
Nevertheless, we really enjoyed the drive along this area and beyond. The reserve itself runs along the coast from Portugal Cove South to just before you reach Cape Race. There are still a few homes in this area. The road is in great condition, freshly laid it appeared. As you can see from our photos, some of the hills were extreme, but traffic is light, all is good!
