King’s Cove is on Route 235 on the Bonavista Peninsula. Route 235 is an alternate scenic route you can take to get to Bonavista or to use for the return trip.
There is a trail in King’s Cove that we would highly recommend. When you get to King’s Cove, take the turnoff towards Duntara and Keels. You’ll see a large white church. The trail starts behind Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. As long as you are not there on Sunday morning, you can park in the church lot. The trail has two options, an inside loop of 1.7 km and an outside loop of 3.5 km.
At the start of the trail there is a wooden gazebo that makes a great spot for a picnic. The trail starts in a meadow and you’ll find foundations to old buildings. We were there in September and found lots of blueberries in the meadow.
The first stop on the trail is the King’s Cove Lighthouse. It sits on top of a pretty big hill and you can walk up to the lighthouse. The trail continues to Fish Point Lookout. It’s a bit of a scramble to climb rocks to this lookout, but you’ll be awarded with great views in both directions. From this lookout, you’ll get your first view of Brook Point.
Continue on the longer outer trail and you’ll come to a side trail to Brook Point. This is the highlight of the trail and one of those spots that a camera does not do full justice. Muti-colour layers of rock slope down towards the ocean. There is a waterfall and brook that runs into the ocean. The wave action from the ocean reverses the flow of the brook regularly.
