Sandbanks Provincial Park is a hidden gem on Newfoundland’s south coast right next to Burgeo.
Take Route 480 south from the Trans Canada near Stephenville. It’s 150 km drive through a very remote area to get to Burgeo. Once you get into town, just follow the signs.
The park has lots of parking for day use. There are also 30 unserviced camp sites. The campground has a very nice comfort station within a short walk of the campground. There are water faucets in a few spots around the campground. We stayed at the campground in August and it was fully booked. We made our reservations in the Spring.
There are five large beaches, all within walking distance of the campground. There is a network of well maintained trails. The trails are a combination of sand, gravel and boardwalk. There are two major lookouts on Cow House Hill and Greep’s Head.
The beaches at Sandbanks are incredibly beautiful. The water is deep with a sandy bottom, giving the water a turquoise colour like you’d see in the Caribbean.
The beaches are open to the ocean and the surf can be really impressive.
Burgeo is right next to the park, so it’s very quick to run out for supplies.
