Ferryland is on the southeast coast of the Avalon Peninsula. It is on Hwy 10, about a 60 minute drive south of St. John’s.

The area was used by migratory fishermen in the 1500’s. Permanent settlement was established in the early 1600’s.

In 1696 Ferryland was destroyed by New France. Not until the late 1980’s did excavations of the original community commence. Active digs continue to this day. The visitors centre provides information about the history of the area and what has been found. A wide range of activities that appeal to all age groups are available. The Ferryland Lighthouse can be seen out on the point. You can drive part of the way if you like and then hike the rest of the way. Since you are on an isthmus, the sea is on either side of you. The lighthouse is perched on the rocks and you can pick a spot to watch for whales!

The Lighthouse is famous for their picnic lunches. These need to be reserved well in advance of your visit. Think weeks! If you can’t reserve a picnic, make sure you pack your own, you will want to take in the scenery for a few hours. Check out the Picnic Link!

There are a number of shops to explore and numerous events fill the summer calendar.

While in Ferryland it is hard not to notice the magnificent stone church on the hill. The construction of Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church began in 1863 and was finally completed in 1898. Several renovations have resulted in drastic changes to the original structure but its original Gothic form is still evident.
