Portugal Cove South is a good 30 km past Cappahayden on Hwy 10. The drive from St. John’s is about 2 hours.
The drive from Cappahayden to Portugal Cove South takes you inland. There is a very rapid change in the landscape that is unbelievable. There is so much open space that you can see. The sky and the land is overwhelming. After driving through such a space Portugal Cove South is a shock! You have to admire the people who live here.
It is easy to spot the Edge of Avalon Interpretive Centre. From here you access The Cape Race Light House, the Myrick Interpretive Centre and Mistaken Point, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. There are also substantial nesting sites for a wide variety of bird species.Very friendly staff will guide you as to things to check out and access to Mistaken Point, which is restricted. Scheduled guide tours, which must be booked in advance, take you out to the fossils. Unfortunately Bob had dealt with gout all summer so walking tours were off the list. This is also your staring point for the drive to Cape Race.
The waters in this region are very rough. You will notice the sound of the surf and it is beautiful to watch here. The community boarders on Portugal Cove and the drive out to Mistaken Point and Cape Race take you along its edge for a distance.
