Settlement in Winterton dates back to 1675. The community was named Scilly Cove until 1912 when they changed the name to Winteron. The name was pronounce ‘Silly Cove’ and became the subject of too many jokes. The town was named after Sir James Spearman Winter, the 10th Premier of Newfoundland.
Winterton is home to the Wooden Boat Museum of Newfoundland and Labrador. It’s one of the best museums in the province. In addition to Wooden Boats, the museum’s upper floor has many interesting artifacts from Winteron’s history.
We stayed in Winterton at the Outside Pond RV Park. It’s a great central location to explore communities on Trinity Bay and Conception Bay.
