Some Favorite Places:

Harbour Breton

Harbour Breton is the largest community on the Connaigre Peninsula on Newfoundland’s south coast. The area is also know as The Coast of Bays. Harbour Breton is on the southern end of the Bay d’Espoir Highway (Route 360). The road cuts 200 km south through the most remote part of the island. There is only one gas station on Route 360 between Bishop’s Falls and Harbour Breton.

Harbour Breton is the best serviced community in the region with a Home Hardware, Foodland and Pharmacy. The town also has a hospital.

The area around Harbour Breton is incredibly beautiful, with fjords that run inland for many miles. The local fishery is active. There is also a large aquaculture (salmon farms) industry in the area.

The town has accommodations and an RV Park at Deadman’s Cove. It’s a great place to set up base for a few days. We’d recommend day trips to Belleoram and surrounding towns. Spend another day visiting the Hermitage area.

Town Festival

We were lucky enough to be in town on the first weekend in August. We were treated to a boat parade in the harbour and one of the best fireworks shows we’ve ever seen.

Trails

The town is surrounded by well kept walking trails. The trail ad Deadman’s Cove features views of Sagona Island, Brunette Island and the French island, Grande Miquelon.

There is a trail to the Rocky Point Lighthouse. From here you can see a shipwreck at Jersey Harbour, a resettled community across the fjord.

The Gun Hill trail is a challenging climb to a lookout that has amazing views of the town and the surrounding area.
