Seal Cove FB, the FB stands for Fortune Bay. There is a second Seal Cove in Newfoundland located on White Bay on the Baie Verte Peninsula. Seal Cove is on Route 364, west of Hermitage and Sandyville. The pavement ends at Seal Cove, you can continue on a gravel road that takes you past the resettled community of Grole towards Pass Island, which still has a lighthouse.
Seal Cove has a great boardwalk that follows the coastline through a peat bog. The boardwalk starts near the government wharf which is on the east side of town.
We met a lady that was picking bakeapples near the trail. Bakeapples are an orange berry that look a bit like a raspberry. You’ll find jams made from bakeapples in many craft stores. We discovered on this trip that bakeapples are usually found in these peat bogs that are fairly common along the coast. The leaf on the bakeapple plant is fairly distinctive and that’s how you’ll find them if the berries are not yet ripe.
There’s a new craze in Newfoundland. People paint rocks and you’ll quite often find them placed along trails. There are several along the boardwalk in Seal Cove. We also found them on trails in Harbour Breton.
