Barr’d Islands is located on the north side of Fogo Island between Shoal Bay and Joe Batt’s Arm. The community surrounds Barr’d Cove. Part of the town is built on islands that have been joined together by causeways. The town probably takes it’s name from these barrier islands that protect the cove.
Barr’d Islands is the 2nd oldest community on Fogo Island, settlement dates back to the early 1700’s.
The Fogo Island Inn in neighbouring Joe Batt’s Arm can be seen from Barr’d Islands.
Memorial University has several interesting historic photos of Barr’d Islands.
Take a drive down Little Harbour Road on the west side of the cove and Hewitt’s Point Road on the east side. You can find salt box houses, stages, a root cellar and some silhouettes fishing off the rocks.
