Conche is one of Newfoundland’s best kept secrets. If you are planning a trip to the Northern Peninsula, we’d definitely recommend adding a couple of days so you can visit Conche. Take Route 434 from Route 433 just north of Roddicton. It’s a 24 km gravel road that’s scheduled to be paved starting in 2018. Make sure you have a full tank of gas before heading down to Conche, there is no gas station in town.
Before driving into Conche, stop at the top of Sailor Jack’s Hill for an incredible view of the surrounding area. On a clear day you’ll be able to see the Grey Islands on the horizon. Our first stop was at the French Shore Interpretation Centre, which is a green building on your right as you drive into town. You’ll want to spend at least an hour here. The ladies can give you some good tips on where to go and what conditions are like on the trails.
There is so much to see in Conche, that in addition to this page we have a few more pages:
Follow the main road into town, it’s called Martinique Drive. When you get down by the main pier, you can return on Harbour Drive, to complete a large loop through town.
The only accommodations that we know of in town is at Ocean Mart Convenience. Make sure you call ahead if you are thinking of staying. When we were there, they were full with workers rebuilding the main pier. The store has a coffee shop and a good grocery section.
